When a New Year is Really a New Beginning

By Laurie Nichols

January 1, 2017

2017 is upon us. As I get older, the years go quicker. Each year, I let out an audible sigh as I consider how I had wanted to tell others about Jesus more and how I had wanted to love them better. Not a year goes by when regret doesn’t pierce my soul and move me towards more fervent prayer for the following year.

But if you know the God I know, then you know He isn’t one to rebuke and not heal, to convict and not forgive. Isaiah 42:3 says, “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.”

Our hearts ache for new beginnings and new opportunities to show and share the love of Jesus with those who are lost and broken and hurting.

Right now, I am reading through the Book of Isaiah. Isaiah 1:18 says, “’Come now, let us reason together,’ says the Lord, ‘though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.’” The point is not that if we feel like we fail at sharing our faith that we have sinned. The point is that in Christ there is a continual, never-ending cycle of new life, new beginnings, and new opportunities. The beginning part of this verse calls us into dialogue with Him, into a loving embrace and presence: come now, let us reason together…

So whether we feel like we have fallen short of loving others well, or fallen short of loving God well, our Abba Father continues to call us into His presence to experience a washing away of guilt and regret and a covering of new chances.

2017 is here. We will fail. We will have regrets. But we have a God who will always and forever keep helping us to our feet, saying, “Don’t fret. Keep your eyes on me and your feet in the race.” Here’s to new opportunities to show and share the love of Jesus in a lost and hurting world…
