A God of Safety in a World of Chaos

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” - Proverbs 18:10

It doesn’t take long for us to see that we live in a broken world. And it certainly doesn’t take much longer to begin to feel the effects of sin all around us. Despair may lead us to throw our hands in the air, heave a collective sigh, and cash in for the day, the week, or the year.

This is why Proverbs 18:10 is so powerful. In the disfunction and unsafe spaces of our world, we always have a place to run for safety—into the loving hands of a Father God who loves us so. When all is crumbling around us, the tower of God’s name stands firm.

And whether we are caring for a neighbor who has just learned she has cancer, or reaching out to the young woman in the brothel, we can bring each person something that nothing on earth can: safety. A place—indeed, a Person and God—who shields us with love even as the torrents of life rage on.

And this is not just a nice thought.

It can change lives.

Recently, I had a conversation with someone who has been dealing with cancer and the varying treatments for nearly a year. No one had told her about this ‘safe’ God up until that point. When she heard that the God she knew was not distant and uncaring, but near and approachable—a very refuge in times of need—she cried tears of joy. She simply stated, “I wish someone had told me this sooner.”

Our God is a strong tower. His being, his nature, his character, even his very name cries to us to draw near to him. When we are weak, he is strong. This is the God that our world needs. And we are the ones who can share this good news of safety in chaos, of refuge in the storm. The question is: How will we do this today?
