God on the Other Side of the Box

For this is what the high and exalted One says-- he who lives forever, whose name is holy: ‘I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.’” – Isaiah 57:15

If you are anything like me, the shutdown of last month caused mixed emotions, The immediate celebratory tone of my day was soon overcome with something else. Justice had been served, after all. The Pandora’s Box of trafficking and sexual exploitation had been shut! I was thankful.

Only minutes after hearing this joyous news, however, a deep sadness overwhelmed me. That Pandora’s Box had allowed us access into the lives of many women we would have otherwise not have been able to reach out to with the love of God, I sighed. They were gone, and the door had been shut.

A dear friend of mine reminded me last week of an important truth that we ought remember daily as we face times of feeling helpless or cut off. She shared a story of how a mother of a girl she knows had cut her out of her life. Her parting words: “You won’t have any access to my daughter anymore.”

The momentary cutting wound of her words was quickly replaced by this reality: As long as she has access to God, she is never cut off, for daily she has access through prayer. “She can never cut me out of her life; in fact, I have just as much influence now!” my friend exclaimed.

Yes, my friend can still intercede daily for this little girl.

In fact, being cut off is never a reality when it comes to the working of God in our world. We always have an open door to others because we can pray for them, and God carries our prayers to where they are. Prayer is presence. This is not just wishful thinking. It’s truth. Our prayers can change the world.

Isaiah 57:15 is a verse we carry when doors are shut. That Pandora’s Box was shut, but God dwells with all those women and men and boys and girls who are on the other side of the box. His presence carries on in their lives. We are assured of that. Our God is so big as to cover all, and yet so near as to dwell in the places even we can’t reach.

So pray big, friends. On the other side of that door, God is at work. Make the seeds blossom, God, and grow beauty where it hasn’t yet shined through. We believe you have gone with them.
