The Freedom of Forgiveness in an Unforgiving World

By Megan

April 1, 2018

"But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." Luke 6:27-28

Another Easter has come and gone. The candy has been consumed and the baskets are packed away for next year. As the season winds down, let the true message we celebrate burn bright. Christ came, paid a costly and gruesome debt; a bloody death which we deserve yet He took in our place.

But there's another message of freedom in this remarkable story. It wasn't just our sins Christ died for, the ones we commit. It was for ALL sin, including the sins committed against us. As we remember Christ's sacrifice let us remember His response to the betrayal of His friends, one of which ultimately led to His death. He patiently gave Judas every opportunity to repent and showed him nothing but love. Even in the garden, Jesus never succumbed to hatred or revenge. Later that same night when Peter betrayed him not once, but three times; Jesus, upon His resurrection welcomed Peter, as His disciple (John 21).

As we wrestle to apply Christ's forgiveness in an unforgiving world of pain and suffering, let us receive God's love to pour out on the undeserving, the unrepentant, as Christ's blood was poured out for our own undeserving selves.

Whether pimp, rapist, pedophile, or a broken friend or family relationship, may we be challenged to pray and pray earnestly for their salvation. Let us love them with the love God fills us with. We may not be able to embrace them in this life, but may that same love spark a desire for us to embrace them in the life to come and drive us to our knees and any action God calls us to on their behalf.

"To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable in others because Christ has forgiven the inexcusable in us." C. S. Lewis
