The Sufficiency of God

By Megan Bussert

June 1, 2018

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me."  2 Corinthians 12:9

I live with C-PTSD (complex post traumatic stress disorder). This means many things but on a daily basis it's a continuous battle against intrusive thoughts, irrational fears, and heightened physical responses. If you are like me, every day is filled with emotional and physical turmoil. The trauma has resided in my body and manifested into fibromyalgia. Pain can make life seem hopeless. That's why I'm always amazed at the sheer endless mercy and grace at the hands of our Heavenly Father.

The morning after a particularly bad panic attack my husband brought me to church. I hid in my pastor’s office during morning class wanting to be left alone. There I was, full of fear and experiencing sharp chest pains, (the last vestige of the previous night's panic attack) wanting to avoid everyone and everything. And as always, this is right where God wanted me, right where He reached me. On the wall was a print of Exodus 14:14

"The Lord will fight for you, you need only be still."

God embraced me and comforted me by reminding me that as His child, He was always with me.

I don't know how to keep going. I don't know how to take the next step. I don't know how to exist with the endless fear and doubt. But God does. And that is all that matters. He sees my tears, my panic attacks, my torment. He is standing here, arms open wide, ready to embrace me and carry me through. HE is sufficient! In deeply practical and intimate ways He is here, now, in my suffering and His love will never falter. I realize I may not be able to control my brain and how I respond to things, but I can surrender my brain, as is, to God and trust that He is enough in ALL circumstances.

What a precious gift grace truly is. God loves us so perfectly despite our numerous flaws, despite our sin and the sins committed against us. Whether we can’t see the end of our trials or even the next step to take, He does. We may not know how, but we will not only be OK, we will be victorious! The battle of this life is won. Take heart in whatever trial you are facing, and rest in that solid truth as you rest in the arms of the Father. What a blessed relief that the hope we need for each day lies in God's perfect sufficiency and not in our own.

"We are being guarded through faith, by God's power. Even our faith is from God. It is a gift. Some of you are struggling through tough times and thinking, "I don't know if I can hold onto God." In the midst of your trials don't miss that He's holding on to you." - Dave Furman
