When Punishment Becomes A Blessing

March 1, 2019

"Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court." (Psalm 127:3-5)

By the tender age of twenty-two years old I had given birth to four beautiful children, two were still in diapers. My oldest was ten and took on the role as the "man of the house" since there was no father figure present. Regretfully, he was forced to grow up fast, often missing out on playing with friends and doing what ten year olds do because I wanted to party and stay out late.

Ultimately, my lifestyle caught up with me and I was placed on home detention for one year with an ankle monitor to ensure I didn't leave my home without permission from my probation officer. The monitor I was forced to wear was huge, humiliating and an eye sore.

After about a month on home detention, I began to see less and less of my "so called" friends and became lonely and depressed. My children would often hop in my lap, kiss my face, and wipe my tears. I was overcome with shame and guilt. Here I was seizing every moment to get away from my children and in reality they were my world and I didn't even realize! Even though I had neglected them for partying and drugging, they were still waiting with so much love and compassion for me! That was the best year of my life! I became the mother I should have been long ago.

Our heavenly Father is waiting with open arms just like my children were. Our Father has to let predicaments occur in our life to bring us back to Him. We may not understand why at the time we're going through what we are. Just know His plan is divine and He makes no mistakes!

"Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise. Many are the plans of person's hearts but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." (Proverbs 19:20-21)
